How Do I Use FTP?

Monday, April 6th, 2009

You can use FTP by downloading an FTP client/browser such as Filezilla and installing on your computer. Then you should use the FTP login information that is provided by your hosting server to fill in all the connection details and connect to your FTP server, allowing you to upload or download files and pages off your website. (Note: to access databases, you will need to go in your Control Panel or use a program such as PHPMyAdmin, not through FTP.)

Downloads:

  • Filezilla - Free Filezilla FTP Client for Windows or Linux.  Works good.
  • CuteFTP - More advanced FTP client with different payment options.  Works on Windows and Mac.

What Does FTP Stand For?

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. (that’s a mouthful!)  What it is, is a set of standards by which files can be transferred across the internet, usually from one computer to another.  Just as HTTP (like the http:// you see at the top of this site, or before any URL that you visit on the net),  is a protocol, so is FTP (but not for browsing, for transferring).  Usually the FTP for a site will be something like ftp://download.com (or whatever domain you are accessing).  It is just a set of rules by which servers can communicate and transfer files across the net (rather than viewing files as you do on an HTTP site).
