What is Joomla?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Joomla is a content management system (or CMS) that is designed for advanced users to manage content on a web site.  The reason I say it is for advanced users, is Joomla tends to have a slightly longer learning curve than other CMS’s due to its large amount of features.

Joomla is used by many large web sites and can be very powerful once learned all the ins and outs that is has to offer.  If you are looking for a large scale CMS, Joomla may be the answer or you may even want to consider a custom CMS with your own in house programmer/designer.  This can get past any headache you may have of first learning a Joomla system.  But all in all Joomla is very powerful and used by many companies and individuals successfully.

Joomla CMS also comes with many extensions and components to increase its functionality and add on ability through third party software components (allowing you to upgrade Joomla, either for free or for a fee).  Many web hosts should have an option to automatically install if installation seems difficult for you.

What is Wordpress?

Wordpress is a content management system (CMS for short) that allows you to easily upload and post pages, entries, and much more with the click of a mouse.

Most hosts will allow you to install this easily and most of the maintenance you can do inside of Wordpress.  Wordpress also comes with many features such as plugins written by third parties and themes to assist in carrying out certain tasks, or having a certain appearance for a web site/blog.

Wordpress is one of the most popular Content Management Systems on the market today and has a huge support base.  It is also available for free under the GNU General Public License meaning it is free for use to all users.  Updates are usually released about once every two months.
